Storage Media For An Avulsed Tooth: Nature To The Rescue

Fawaz S Siddiqui, Swati Karkare

Tooth avulsion or exarticulation is a traumatic injury of dental tissue characterised by complete displacement of the tooth out of its socket. Successful treatment outcome of such an injury is dependent on the survival of the viable periodontal ligament cells attached to the tooth root surface. The viability of the periodontal ligament cells is best preserved either when the tooth is immediately replanted into its socket or if it is stored in an appropriate storage /transport medium till a time, the tooth can be replanted into its socket. A number of storage /transport medium are available both of natural origin and laboratory prepared solutions. This review discusses various storage/ transport media for avulsed tooth obtained from natural sources. The knowledge of availability and accessibility of such natural storage media would increase the awareness among the healthcare providers and would therefore improve the prognosis of the treatment protocol by reducing extra-oral dry time of the avulsed tooth.

Anti implantation and Pregnancy Interruption Activity of Japakusuma (Hibiscus rosa Sinensis) & its combinations in Albino Rats

Kashinath S Hadimur, R S Sarashetti, V G Kanthi

Introduction: Population explosion has created grave setback in the economic growth and all-round human development in developing countries. Current pandemic population explosion demands an immediate betterment of new potential contraceptives Easy availability and acceptability of contraceptive help the poorer countries to cut down the population growth and all other nations to avoid maternal morbidity and mortality arising from unplanned pregnancies. Hormonal steroids or various forms of barrier designs are predominantly used contraceptives methods. Studies of many years have highlighted the unmet demand for safe, inexpensive and acceptable contraceptives to avoid unwanted pregnancies Oral contraceptives have been mentioned in Ayurvedic classics like 1) Pippali (Piper longum), + Vidanga (Emblica ribes) + Tankana (Sodii Biboras). 2) Talisapatra (Taxus baccata) + Gairika (Hematite) with cold water 3) Japakusuma (Hibiscus rosa Sinensis) Kanji bhavita (Triturated with sour gruel) Experimental studies on above mentioned 1, 2 & 3 formulations have been proved as temporary contraceptive medicine at BLDEA’s AVS PGCRC Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya Bijapur. To evaluate the permanent or long term temporary contraceptive effect of Japakusuma (Hibiscus rosa Sinensis) Kanji bhavita (Triturated with sour gruel) in combination with Pippali (Piper longum) Vidanga (Emblica ribes) and Tankana (Sodii Biboras) an attempt was made in this study & compared with Individual drug effect. Method: Study was carried out by Choudary and Khanna method on 18 female, 36 male (for mating) albino rats. Pippali (Piper longum) Vidanga (Emblica ribes) Tankana (Sodii Biboras) Japakusuma (Hibiscus rosa Sinensis) Kanji bhavita (Triturated with sour gruel) formulation, Japakusuma (Hibiscus rosa Sinensis) Kanji bhavita (Triturated with sour gruel) and Propylene glycol, formed the materials. Single dose was administered on proestrous stage of rat oestrous cycle & observed for anti implantatio

Centralized Fat Status of Adolescent Girls in Saudi Arabia in Comparison to the United Kingdom Reference Data

Elham A Aljaaly

To measure the anthropometric profile of Jeddah adolescent girls based on their waist circumference (WC) status. To identify the centralized fat status of participants in comparison to the United Kingdom’s reference data. Measurement of WC for 1519 female adolescents (13 to 18 years) was taken. Construction of Z-scores and percentile and smoothing for the all taken WC measurements using the LMS methodology that summarizes the changing distribution by three curves representing the median, coefficient of variation and skewness, The UK reference data was used for comparisons. The percentage of girls with waist-circumference scores of ≥ 90th percentile was the highest (9.7%) among 13-years old girls, compared to other age groups. Girls who aged 17 years had the highest proportion (36.7%; 98 out of 370) of WC scores ≤ 10th percentile. The mean WC for Saudi girls in all ages (13 to 17 years) was above the 75th percentile. In comparison with the waist circumference ‘percentile curves’ for British girls aged 5.0 ± 16.9 years, the mean WC for Saudi girls in the all studied ages was above the 75th percentile. In comparison to the UK female population, Jeddah adolescent girls had a higher WC among all compared ages, and 20% of girls in Saudi Arabia were centrally obese. The study has generated imperative data on values for the percentile WC of adolescent girls in Saudi Arabia, which could help to establish national criteria for determining central obesity based on this simple anthropometric measurement.

Evaluation of Efficacy of Gambhari Phala Churna on Satva

Ashalatha M, Kuber Sankh

Gambhari, an essential component of Dashamuala dravya is termed to be Rasayanadravya, medhya activity has been related to its fruits, which are edible in nature. Memory enhancing effect of Gambhariphala has been evaluated clinically on school children belonged to different socio-economic status. The children were grouped and administered with Gambhari phalachurna granules 5 gm once daily at morning and Placebo powder 5 gm respectively once daily at morning the children were advised to follow the diet for 90 days and follow up period set for 90 days. Efficacy of Gambhariphalachurna was assessed using parameters mentioned in Charakasamhita Vimanasthana 8th chapter i.e Rogabhishagajitiyaadhyaya and results were compared with placebo group using SPSS statistical tool. Significant improvement were noticed among Gambhariphala churna treated group with respect to all the parameters, hence Gambhariphalachurna on satva is established scientifically w.s r. to memory promoting activity.
