      <abstract>
        <p>The global burden of diabetes as per the International Diabetes Federation 2013 amounts to 382 million and is fast gaining the status of a potential epidemic in India with more than 65 million diabetic individuals currently diagnosed with the disease1, 2Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder which causes high mortality and morbidity due to its micro vascular and macro vascular complications.3Although there is an increase in the prevalence of type 1 diabetes, the major driver of the epidemic is the more common form of diabetes, i.e. type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) which accounts for more than 90% of all diabetes cases.4Even though diabetes poses high economic burden in India, the real burden of the disease is mainly due to its associated complications.</p>
